All the More Reason to Love My Mac

Pardon me for a post while I go geeky on you.

I decided earlier this week that I wanted to experiment with something in Windows 7.  Even though we purchased an upgrade version of Windows 7 over 2 years ago, the virtual machine I have running Windows was still happily in the XP world.  So, I decided it was time to upgrade that baby - and let me tell you, it sounded a lot easier than it actually was.

After digging up the email (not a challenge - thank you Gmail), I went to download the files that I needed.  And...we were supposed to do that within 30 days of the purchase .  But, knowing how we're relatively on top of those sorts of things, I figured we must have it on a disc somewhere.  Well, we must, somewhere, but goodness knows where.  Luckily, I found the file that I needed to start the download, and things started looking up as I waited for the 3GB to download.  Running the installer should've been all it took - no, wait, this is windows we're talking about.  And, since Windows XP is 32 bit, and I was installing Windows 7 64 bit...it wouldn't do it.  But did it tell me that?  Given your experience with "helpful" Windows error messages, what's your guess?  No?  Ding ding ding!  It gave some cryptic message about not being able to read or write files to that particular directory - lie!  *sigh*  All this to say that it's a good thing I'm (kind of) tech savvy, because the remainder of what I had to do (including a registry change...seriously?!) would not have passed anybody's Grandma check.

Oh Mac, how do I love thee?  Let me count the ways...

p.s. For anybody wondering about the experiment that was the impetus for the whole effort - that didn't work either.  Windows - 10, Cheryl - 0.
